Use a pine panel for the desktop and a flatpack five-tier bookcase unit to create the nook, painting all pieces before assembly. One fixed shelf is replaced with a hidden batten to support the desktop in the bookcase.

• Drill with 8G countersinking, driver and 3mm bits

• 400mm spirit level
• Flatpack bookcase
• 120- and 180-grit sandpaper
• Three-in-one primer
• Water-based enamel paint in two colours (we used Dulux Red Jacks and Taubmans Harbour Sky)
• 42mm x 19mm x 1.2m DAR pine•
• 1200mm x 600mm x 18mm pine panel•
• Woodworking adhesive
• 8G x 35mm chipboard screws
• Timber filler with scraper
• Two 710mm x 50mm metal legs with adjustable feet
• 8G x 20mm button head screws
